Code Academy Review

Code Academy is a website for people that are interested in learning to program. It was one of the first sites I tried on my coding journey because it was completely free. The site is a great introduction to coding as it treats programming like a video game.

Code Academy Review

At one point I had a 37 day coding streak at Code Academy

The problem with Codecademy is that it’s too easy to complete most of what the site has to offer, and by the the end of that, still not know enough programming to do anything. I completed numerous tracks like Python, Ruby, and Javascript, but couldn’t build anything of my own with the knowledge Code Academy gave me.

Code Academy best serves as a tool to find out whether or not you like programming. If you realize that you do, it’s time to move to a better site like Team Treehouse.  Personally, I waited way too long to make the transition. I didn’t join Treehouse until I found out about there 30 day free trial, which you can learn more about in this blog post. Treehouse shows you how to build things from bottom-up with Youtube-like videos, which was exactly what I needed.

Positives of Codecademy

  • Let’s you find out whether you like programming for free
  • Makes coding feel like a game

  • Difficult to transfer Code Academy knowledge into the real world

If you’re new to programming, I recommend Code Academy. But if you find out that programming is something you seriously want to get better at, think about joining Treehouse sooner rather than later.
